Lesson 04: Introduction to Playing Tab.

  • Tablature (Tab) is a graphical representation of the guitar strings with numbers representing what frets are to be played. 
  • The top line of Tab represents the 1st String (your thinnest string on the bottom).
  • The bottom line of Tab represents the 6th String (the thickest string on top).
  • Play the following Tab Notes for practice.  Listen to the audio file provided to check if you are playing the correct notes.  Review the Tab Primer in References if needed.
  • For ALL exercise below, use your 3rd finger for all notes on the 3rd fret, 2nd finger on the 2nd fret, and your 1st finger on the first fret only.

  • Play the tab, guess what song you are playing.  
  • After you guess, play along with the audio file for practice.

  • ANSWERS: Exercise 20 is “Mary Had A Little Lamb”, by Sarah Josepha Hale (May 24th, 1830).  Exercise 21 is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” words by Jane Taylor (1806) music by Mozart.

Exercise 22: The E Minor Pentatonic Scale

  • A Scale in music is a group of related notes in a Descending and or Ascending order or Pitch. Scales follow a pattern of Intervals.
  • Interval – the difference between two sounds. The distance from one sound to another.
  • The Audio file for Exercise 22 repeats 3 times for practice (total 4x)
