Lesson 02: F# and G# Notes.

F Sharp Note (F#)

The F Sharp Note (F#, # is the symbol for “Sharp”) is played by using your 2nd Finger on the 2nd Fret of String 1.  Sharp in music has a couple of meanings, when applied to a Note (Note F), it means you play the note 1 Fret (1 half step) higher in pitch.

G Sharp Note (G#)

Exercise 08: Playing F# & G#

  • When a Sharp Symbol (#) is placed before the first note, then all the other proceeding notes are also Sharp.  Therefore, measure 1 contains 4 F# Quarter Notes, and measure 2 contains 4 G# Quarter Notes.

Exercise 09: Mix 1

  • If a Sharp (#) symbol is placed before a Note, all proceeding notes on the same line are also sharp.

Exercise 10: Mix 2

Exercise 11: Sharps & Naturals

  • A (b) Flat symbol lowers the note 1 Half Step (1 Fret) down in Pitch.
  • A Natural Symbol (see lower right picture) Cancels out a Sharp or Flat restoring the note to the natural pitch.
